CDMP Community YouTube Channel

If you are studying for the CDMP Exam, or just interested in learning more about the profession, you can find collections of relevant videos at the new CDMP Community YouTube Channel.  These are selections from across YouTube, organized into Playlists by functional areas of the DMBOK and topics covered on various CDMP exams.

It's a work in progress, so please help by recommending video resources that you found particularly useful in helping you to understand a concept.

CDMP Exams at Enterprise Data World 2014

Pat Cupoli will again be leading a CDMP Exam Prep class at Enterprise Data World.  It will be held on Sunday, April 27th in Austin, TX, and pre-registration is required.  There will also be several opportunities for conference attendees to take exams to get certified at the conference.

As an added bonus at Enterprise Data World 2014, all exam candidates can take the exams at the conference on a “pay if you pass” basis. ICCP's 2014 DAMA member rate is $285 for each exam ($350 for non-members), paid only if you pass at 50% correct or better.

The location of exams will be in the schedule and posted at the conference.  Just drop-in during any of these times.  On-site registration and payment can be handled at the time of the exam.

YOU WILL NEED TO BRING YOUR OWN WINDOWS LAPTOP. The exams run off a USB drive. Make sure your corporate laptop does not have encrypted USB drives. If you are not sure, check by saving a file to a USB on that laptop and opening the file afterwards.

DataVersity Webinar on Data Jobs

I know this blog has not been particularly active for awhile - the result of being over-committed at work.  :)  However, I had the opportunity to discuss Emerging Trends in Data Jobs with Peter Aiken and Mehmet Orun on a DataVersity Webinar today and wanted to share information for those who couldn't attend (and thank those who did!)

This is part of a DataVersity series led by Peter Aiken called "Data-Ed Online."   For data professionals interested in certification or professional development programs, this will be an interesting series to follow.  The recording of today's presentation will be available on-demand at the DataVersity website.

We also hope to continue the discussion at Enterprise Data World in Austin.

Celebrating Forty Years of... Providing the Standard in IT Certification

A Dinner celebrating ICCP's 40th anniversary will be held on Saturday, May 4th at the Hotel del Coronado on Coronado Island in San Diego. All ICCP holders and their guests are welcome.

We will recognize two new Fellows who have contributed to ICCP and to professionalism in general: Dr. Lynn McKell and Fred Harris, one of the founders of the ICCP.

Past and present board members will be in attendance to reminisce and reflect upon the ICCP and what it has meant to them.

50 Years of Professional Certification

Joe Albers, CCP, CBIP, CDMP has written an excellent article about the history of certification and the ICCP.  This article was posted on the AITP website, and and abbreviated version is included below as a guest post for this blog.  The ICCP has come a long way in 50 years!

Certificate in Data Processing (CDP) Emerged 50 Years Ago
By Joseph Albers, CCP, CBIP, CDMP
Chair of the IT Credentialing & Certification Committee

September 2012 is the 50th anniversary of the introduction of the Certificate in Data Processing (CDP) certification by the Association of Information Technology Professionals (AITP), formerly known as the National Machine Accountants Association (NMAA) and the Data Processing Management Association (DPMA).

The first CDP examination was given at New York University in June 1962 where 235 of the 340 candidates passed. The first certificate, 620001, was awarded to George W. Abbott, FLMI, CPA, CDP on September 4, 1962 and was later presented to the Smithsonian Institution in October 1977.

In August 1973 the Data Processing Management Association (DPMA) became one of the founding constituent members of the Institute for the Certification of Computing Professionals (ICCP), which expanded the goals of the certification along with other Data Processing related societies.

The CDP, along with Certificate in Computing Programming (CCP) and the Certificate in Systems Programming (CSP), were converted to the current Certified Computing Professional (CCP) certification in 1994, at which point 33,972 CCP certificates were issued.

The ICCP continues to be active in providing the standard in certification for business intelligence, data management and computing, with over 98,750 certificates issued in the past thirty-nine years.

AITP continues its involvement as a constituent member of the ICCP, appointing two directors, Bill Fly, CCP (ICCP President and AITP President-Elect) and Joseph Albers, CCP, CDMP, CBIP (ICCP Secretary and AITP Chair of the IT Credentialing & Certification committee), who serve on ICCP’s Board of Directors.

Another Successful Bootcamp in Seattle, 14 earn CDMP

DAMA Puget Sound Chapter held a summer CDMP Exam Prep Bootcamp on July 13-14 at the Best Western Executive Inn in downtown Seattle.

There were 14 attendees, one of the largest classes held in Seattle. Two attendees even made the trek down from Vancouver, BC to get certified! Others are currently employed by local organizations such as Premera, Costco, Expediters, Group Health, Microsoft and Russell Investments.  Amidst a Seattle-style thunder storm on Friday, the class forged ahead to complete the IS Core and the Data Management Core exams on Day One.  With two out of three exams under their belt, Day Two was a lot less stressful for most.  By the end of Day Two, an amazing 100% of the class had successfully completed all exams and achieved the CDMP credential!

Congratulations to the following new Certified Data Management Professionals:
